Muntada Aid is on a journey to transform education at our partner schools in Africa. Apart from building the capacity, we are providing free school meals to children at these institutions.
We are currently running our school meals programme in Uganda, Niger and Mali.
Why School Meals?
For over three decades, Muntada Aid has worked to transform education across Africa, addressing critical challenges faced by millions of children. Hunger is one of the biggest obstacles, as many students attend school on an empty stomach, impacting their concentration and ability to learn.
Girls are particularly disadvantaged, often kept at home for domestic duties, with numbers doubling in conflict-affected regions, making them 2.5 times more vulnerable.
School meal programmes are a game changer. They keep children in school, improve attendance and performance, and promote health while also supporting local economies and food systems.
Muntada Aid’s initiatives aim to foster better food habits and education standards, ensuring future generations are equipped to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. Together, we can build healthier, more skilled communities.
How You Can Support Uganda
Muntada Aid, in partnership with Buraq Educational Trust, is providing modern primary education to 300 children in the outskirts of Uganda.
The school has three nursery classes where we educate children from 3 to 6 years. At the primary school section, we are teaching over 190 children. All children are taught English, Maths, Sciences, History, and Social Sciences along with other subjects recommended by the government's national curriculum.
The other fundamental part of the education programme is sports and nutritious food. We encourage children to participate in sports activities and have a full-fledged programme available for football and track and field.
School Meals
As children start early and spend most of the day at school, we provide two and three school meals to children daily throughout the term time.
We have a fully functional kitchen onsite, and in the mornings, we provide freshly cooked porridge. The lunch and dinners are a combination of beans and plantain.
We are currently in the process of refurbishing the school building, furniture, bathrooms, and also modernising the kitchen and washing areas.

By contributing £30 per month, you can provide a child in Uganda with modern education and three nutritious meals a day for an entire month.
Children's Food Crisis in Mali
UNICEF reports that nearly 5 million children in Mali urgently need humanitarian assistance. This includes health, nutrition, education, protection, and access to safe water. The need has grown by at least 1.5 million children since 2020. These children face severe challenges due to ongoing crises in the region.
Ongoing conflict and displacement in Mali threaten nearly 1M children under 5 with acute malnutrition by December 2023. At least 200,000 of these children are at risk of dying from hunger without urgent aid. Restricted humanitarian access is worsening the crisis and jeopardizing lives.
Mali’s political instability is fueling a humanitarian crisis that’s largely overlooked by global aid agencies. Children and families in Mali are facing severe hardships as part of a broader emergency in the central Sahel, affecting Burkina Faso and Niger. It’s critical that humanitarian aid reaches these vulnerable populations without delays to ensure their survival.
Current Education Situation in Mali
Although education in Mali has been improving over the last decade, more than two million children aged between 5 to 17 still do not go to school, and over half of Mali’s young people aged 15 to 24 are not literate.
Household poverty, child labour, child marriage, insecurity and a lack of schools close to children’s homes are all factors driving the high drop out and out-of-school rate in Mali.
Among children that do attend school, the absence of qualified teachers, textbooks and low-quality school environment all adversely affect learning outcomes: the vast majority of students in fifth grade in Mali are not able to master basic mathematics and reading skills.
What Are We Doing About It?
Muntada Aid, in partnership with local organizations, is providing modern secondary education in Komantou, 250 km from Bamako. The project includes a solar-powered school building, clean water access, a football field, and computer facilities for students
Muntada Aid offers vocational training scholarships to vulnerable girls pursuing a Bachelor’s in Fashion Design. These scholarships help ease the financial burden for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, some of whom reside in girls-only institutes run by local charities.
Muntada Aid provides freshly cooked meals to nearly 100 vulnerable children, mostly girls, living in safe spaces managed by local charities in Bamako. The project aims to ensure food security by offering regular, nutritious meals to children as they attend education and vocational programs at government-run schools.

Malnutrition in Niger
Malnutrition remains a significant threat to children's health and development in Niger, with 15% of children acutely malnourished. The number of stunted children is expected to rise by 44% by 2025, exacerbated by rapid population growth.
The country faces the world’s eleventh-highest child mortality rate, with a large portion of the population lacking proper sanitation, access to education, and living in poverty. With 48% of children under the poverty line and 75% deprived of essential services, Niger’s future remains bleak.
Education is severely impacted, with 93% of primary students struggling with basic reading and math skills. Adult literacy rates are low, and girls face greater barriers to education than boys. Children from poor households are far more likely to miss out on schooling, further deepening the cycle of poverty.
What is Muntada Aid Doing?
We are supporting a school meals programme for over 250 underprivileged children on the outskirts of Niamey. Many of these children arrive at school without breakfast and no guarantee of food for the day. Our initiative provides daily, nutritious meals to ensure they have the energy to learn and thrive.
