Why maternal health matters

The joy of being a mother is unmatched — yet every year around 300,000 mothers, or mothers-to-be, die in pregnancy and childbirth. Our Mothers provides critical post-natal healthcare, midwifery training, maternal clinics and vital medicines to make motherhood safer.

Our response

What is Muntada Aid Doing?

Challenges for maternal and neonatal health include lack of continuous training for midwives and birth attendants, limited access to medicines and poor understanding within the community about the support available in childbirth.

Muntada Aid is committed to supporting the local communities to train and empower the maternal health practitioners and also provide mothers with vital medicines in Sub-Saharan Africa.

We are providing a comprehensive in-service training programme in these countries. This will help in creating a workforce with the capacity and capabilities to deal with the increasing demand in healthcare services.

Training

Training the next generation of midwives

The maternal health practitioners in Sub-Saharan Africa work under extremely challenging conditions. Long hours, non-existent wages and minimal support structure is the common story. The midwives frequently have to look after several labouring women on their own. Most of these midwives receive no further training and their skillset remains limited and they often lack the knowledge base and technical knowhow. Often their training is inadequate or out of date. Maternal death is something they face frequently in the absence of up to date equipment, drugs and most of all training.

Muntada Aid provides Skills Sharing Workshops run by volunteer UK midwives. The aim is to offer opportunities to local midwives to refresh and update their knowledge and practice their skills in a supportive and safe environment. The ultimate aim is to make birth safer for women in Sub-Saharan Africa.
