About Little Hearts

The Little Hearts Project is dedicated to providing free, life-saving heart surgeries for babies and children from underprivileged families suffering from Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs). This initiative aims to give these children a chance at a healthier life, regardless of their gender, race, or religion.

By offering this critical medical care at no cost, the project removes financial barriers and ensures that vulnerable families have access to the treatment their children urgently need.

Why Little Hearts Matter

1.5 million children are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) globally each year. This means that millions of children are born with structural heart problems that can significantly affect their health from the start of life.

10% of babies born with CHD do not survive their first year of life. The severity of the heart defects can cause life-threatening complications early on, and without proper treatment, many of these babies unfortunately do not make it past their first year.

Thousands more children with CHD die before reaching adulthood. Even if they survive infancy, many children with untreated or undiagnosed CHD face ongoing health challenges that can prevent them from living a full life, with many not surviving into adulthood.

Little Hearts is Muntada Aid’s

In poor, underdeveloped countries, the lack of specialized medical infrastructure means babies born with congenital heart defects have little or no access to necessary treatment. Many regions, especially in low-income countries, lack the specialized healthcare infrastructure, such as pediatric cardiologists, hospitals, and equipment, needed to diagnose and treat congenital heart defects.

Muntada Aid views congenital heart defects as a silent killer, where neglecting to treat these conditions directly impacts children's survival rates. Without intervention, many children suffer and die prematurely, despite the fact that many of these conditions are treatable with timely medical care.

While most congenital heart defects can be treated with surgery or medical intervention, children continue to face suffering and death because the necessary resources, healthcare facilities, and trained medical personnel are scarce in underdeveloped regions.

She Has The Perfect Name, Blessing

Blessing was just 10 days old when she underwent her Pulmonary Atresia. This was the first time a 10 day old child had been administered such a complex procedure by our team in Tanzania, coming “As close to life saving as it gets”.

A PDA stent was implemented, allowing the Blessing’s lungs to be properly supplied with blood. After two hours, the procedure was successful, resulting in a temporary fix for Blessing until she is able to be operated within the following two years.

Most health infrastructure destroyed.

Denzel Fortress Of Hope

Denzel Malula is a 6-year-old child, diagnosed with coronary heart disease, which narrows or blocks arteries preventing and minimising vital blood flow to the heart.

With the tireless work of our Tanzanian team, Denzel was provided with a PDA device closure and was in good spirits before he was discharged after his successful procedure.

(Tanzania) How Little Hearts Programme Changed The Country's Paediatric Cardiac Care

At the heart of Little Hearts is the noble mission of saving children's lives worldwide. We do this by sending medical teams to countries of deployment, building permanent cardiac centres, and building capacity in the countries where we operate.

In 2016, there were no doctors at the center in Tanzania capable of performing heart surgeries on children. Our Little Hearts team was the first to conduct surgeries that year. Since then, through ongoing training and support, we've helped build the local team's capacity, enabling them to perform complex heart operations independently.

Hijrah Ride A Journey Like No Other

Hijrah Ride is a flagship partnership between Muntada Aid and H&KCC. This annual cycling event is a three-day marathon in which riders from various parts of the UK cycle from Mecca to Madinah, covering a distance of over 550 kilometres between the two of Islam's holiest mosques.

The journey symbolises the migration that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) took as he fled persecution in Mecca and sought safety in Madinah.

The fourth edition of Hijrah Ride, also known as Hijrah Ride 1446, is scheduled for January 2025. During the first three editions of Hijrah Ride, we raised over £396,000 for projects helping children with healthcare & providing emergency aid to those fleeing war.
