Journey of Hope

Halima Garba is 70 years old. She lives with her daughter and grandchildren in a small compound on the outskirts of Tahoua, some 300 kilometres from the capital Niamey in Niger.

Halima has cataracts in both her eyes. The family's socio-economic situation and the poor national health infrastructure in Niger have kept her partially blind for the past five years.

Halima heard about our mission in Tahoua over the radio and registered for the surgery. This is her journey of hope and light.

Halima has been waiting for this day for the past five years. She was observed by the Muntada Aid team of doctors and was booked for an eye surgery in the summer of 2022.

Halima had a successful lens her replacement surgery. The lens of her left eye was replaced with a synthetic one, making her vision clearer and brighter.

About Gift of Sight

Our missions are uncomplicated, but their impact on individuals, families and communities is profound. An estimated 5 million people are blinded by cataracts each year. Blindness affects more than 4% of the population in parts of sub-Saharan Africa.

Each day during this deployment in Tahoua, our team performed over 150 surgeries. Hundreds of people would queue up and stay overnight inside the hospital complex, sleeping under trees and waiting for their turn. Some made journeys that would take them days.

In 2022, we performed over 2100 similar surgeries in Africa.

An estimated 5 million people are blinded by cataract each year. Blindness affects more than 4% of the population in parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
